Remote, unspoilt, rugged, wild, unique.. just some of the words that are used to describe Shetland and what brought us here to make cheese. Technology doesn't allow you to taste our cheese through the screen, so you'll have to make do with our descriptions and pictures. Hopefully if you live locally, are visiting or place an online order, you'll have the opportunity to taste our traditional, handmade cheese.. we think that it is yummy, but we would say that, wouldn't we? You can see us at local Farmers Markets, our Creamery Shop and Cafe in Skeld on the Sunny (almost always!) Westside of Shetland. You can also by our cheese at over 20 local shops across Shetland and online from anywhere. Visit our online shop here www.ekmpowershop19.com/ekmps/shops/thecheesemaker/ As the UK's most Northerly producer of cheese, located in a former smokehouse 28 miles from Lerwick, closer to the Arcic Circle than to London, we think we are really different to those big factory producers of cheese located on industrial estates across the UK. Each of our small batches are handcrafted using local milk and traditional methods of production being hand finished and laid to mature from 6 weeks to 12 months to develop some distinctive flavours. All cheeses are free of unnecessary chemicals, colourings or preservatives, and are vegetarian and gluten-free. We are passionate about our cheese, a real labour of love and during our two years of production we think we have developed some real winners... try our Soothe Mooth, Sandstinger or Reeky Jack to name just three. All have distinctive flavours/textures, and these are supplemented by a changing range of flavoured cheeses. If you can make it out to the Creamery, we'd be happy to give you a complimentary taster. The shop is open during creamery hours which are usually mon-friday 10-5:00 although somedays we are open until later. We are also usually open on saturdays, when there is not a Farmers Market on. We also have a small cafe at the creamery serving filled rolls, cheese platters and refreshments. Whilst we will always do our best to explain details about the cheesemaking and show the production area through our viewing hatch, we also offer behind the scenes tours (by appointment - small fee applies) - where visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about cheesemaking, enter the production area and maturation room and see how we produce our cheese. The tour will take approximately an hour. Please ask for further details or call/email to book a visit See our Facebook page 'Shetland Cheese Ltd' for up to date information on what we are doing.. this includes cheesemaking courses - where for £40, you can spend a day in the Creamery, making cheese. We provide protective clothing, lunch and you even get to keep a 750g cheese that you make (we mature it for 4-6 weeks and post on to you (£5 charge) or deliver locally for free). Get in touch to book a place. ____________________________________________________________________________ You can contact us on info@shetlandcheese.co.uk or call on 01595 860202.
